Child Care & Preschool
"Children are not things to be molded, but are people to be unfolded."
Shine is a Nurture Center which provides a healthy space for the nourishment and growth of young children, ages 2 months to 5 years, while they are away from their parents. Shine provides holistic, nurturing, nature-based, child-led care.
We are a small, cozy child care center located in Mt. Airy.
*Please see COVID tab for 2020/2021 updates to our program structure.
We serve 2 healthy snacks and a home-made lunch each day.We are Montessori-inspired, but not strictly Montessori. We follow a nature-based, play-based curriculum.
Our staff members come from a variety of backgrounds. You may learn more about them here!
Shine's Core Values:
We believe there is more to health than a lack of illness, and that true wellness must include nurturing, healthy meals, plenty of exercise, and fresh air. We teach children how to care for themselves physically and mentally, for example, we incorporate cooking classes, yoga, and meditation into our weekly routines.
Nurturing & Developmentally Appropriate
We meet children where they naturally are. Shine is dedicated to adhering to a developmentally appropriate curriculum. We provide attachment-based care with lots of close comfort for our littlest members and we foster independence and autonomy in toddlers and preschoolers (who sometimes need cuddles too!). Our low ratios allow us to spend quality time with each child. We believe each child develops at their own pace and that adults must meet them where they are.
Shine is nestled into a cove of Mount Airy Forest. The plants, trees, and birds provide the perfect backdrop for our nature-based curriculum, and children spend time each day playing in the large, fenced-in outdoor play space or hiking in the Forest in our backyard. Children are allowed to get dirty when they play outside and we garden on-site. We follow a nature-based curriculum, and our days and calendars follow natural circadian and seasonal rhythms.
We believe that children are active learners and have an intrinsic motivation to learn. Young children learn best through play. Teachers are primarily responsible for creating a stimulating classroom environment and setting boundaries, and children take the lead on what they would like to work on each day. Children are allowed to learn at their own pace and focus on skills that are of interest to them.
